Experiences from Uganda Maarifa Centres

 

The Ugandan Maarifa Centres have come of age. The Awach, Metu and Gulu Maarifa Centres have become a 'must visit' place for the communities in Northern Uganda. In April 2011, James Nguo, ALIN Regional Director and an Ashoka Fellow visited the centres. The video shows community members experiences on using computers for the first time at the centres.

ALIN Maarifa Centres

A Maarifa centre is a room or a ‘fabricated shipping container’ where communities access information resources. The centre is equipped with computers and internet access. It is an information hub where local knowledge is documented by communities with the support of field officers and shared widely.

Enkaramatani

Enkaramatani is a Maasai statement meaning "Mother Shephard" The video was shot in Isinya, Kajiado District in Kenya. The film is about the role of Maasai women in Cattle keeping and their sentiments to all the Maasai women in keeping livestock production. The challenges they face as women and what are the alternatives of livelihood there is in the quest for survival.
The film was produced by Isinya Community Knowledge Centre, a network of Arid Lands Information Network supported by the Finnish Embassy

Adapting to Climate Change in Kyuso

This film shows how climate change is affecting the community of Kyuso, in Kenya. Joseph Mwangangi and Joseph Meithya Kasawla explain how the rains have failed in recent years, leading to crop failures and food shortages in the region. Many people now have to buy grain from the Kenya Cereals Board, and prices are increasing rapidly.
